Card decisioning & secured cards

App development and DevOps across Capital One's secured credit card services and Decide, the platform that orchestrates credit card decisioning.

  • Led and delivered the move of the offer-management batch engine from Scala to PySpark, opening it up to further ML/AI work.
  • Ran the Aurora DMS migration of the card decisioning Postgres database, and trained the incoming engineers who carried out its performance testing and certification.
  • Build and operate services in Java (Spring), Go and Python on Lambda, Docker and ECS/Fargate.
  • Use Claude Code and Windsurf day to day for development and DevOps.

Card authorization gateways

Built the gateway and all of its infrastructure for Menards' in-store and online credit card transactions, connecting POS to the authorization and payment backends.

  • Migrated an on-premises mainframe authorization app to a cloud-based Java gateway.
  • Built the Stand-In Process Engine that keeps approving within policy when the backend authorizers can't be reached.
  • Wrote a real-time alerting service that matches log patterns and pages PagerDuty when thresholds are crossed, plus a Python health-check service and an automated regression suite.
  • Tested with JUnit, Cucumber and JMeter, over TCP/IP sockets and REST.

The McDonald's Android app

Shipped the flagship ordering app to the U.S. market: mobile ordering, restaurant geo-services, deals and API networking.

  • Led the core team's UI design and build of the redesigned homepage and ordering screens.
  • Moved the codebase from MVC to MVP for testability, and cut app launch and build times.
  • Personally handled APK uploads to the U.S. app's Google Play listing during my tenure.
  • Used NewRelic data to find and fix performance and stability problems.
